BIPOC Choreography- People of Rhythm by the Swing Arts Foundation
The Swing Arts Foundation BIPOC Choreography Project was created to provide mentorship, creative development, and performance opportunities for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color within the swing dance community. Through this initiative, dancers collaborate with established choreographers to develop new work, strengthen their artistic voices, and gain experience performing in prominent community venues.
This performance, choreographed by Steven Plummer and presented at Camp Jitterbug, is set to Etta James’s “Something’s Got a Hold on Me.” Drawing from the rich traditions of jazz music and dance, the piece celebrates joy, connection, and collective expression while honoring the Black cultural roots from which swing dance emerged.
By creating opportunities for underrepresented artists to learn, create, and perform, the BIPOC Choreography Project helps foster a more inclusive, representative, and vibrant swing dance community.
